Hanging Rock

One of the things we have enjoy about North Carolina is its close proximity to everything. We are close to the mountains and the beach. Its nice not being as landlocked as we are in Texas, where you drive 8 hours to get to the beach or the mountains and even more to get out of the state!

A few weeks ago we made a trip to Hanging Rock, a mountain state park about an hour from where we live. The park has a ton of trails that lead to different parts of the mountain and we could have spent all day (or days) exploring them.

ImageWe picked three trails to explore: Hanging Rock, Upper Cascade Falls and Window Falls.

Hanging Rock was the longest but the views were BEAUTIFUL!

We ate lunch at the top of the mountain and took lots of pictures!

This view would be even more gorgeous right now since all the leaves have changed. Justin and his friend Sean went back a few weeks ago to complete the peak challenge, which was 11 miles. I think they enjoyed it!

I spoke too soon

Last night Justin and I went to see Silver Linings Playbook at Aperture with some friends. I love this theatre because they show a lot of movies you might not see other places and they serve wine!

The movie was fantastic. Jennifer Lawerence did an incredible job and truly deserved the Golden Globe (and to beat Meryl Streep)

Unfortunately at the end of the movie, an intense migraine took over my body. While I have gotten migraines a couple of times a month since I was 12, this was one of the worst of my life. Justin being the great husband he is, rushed me home immediately following the movie and put me to bed. My migraines are pretty debilitating.

I was happy when I woke feeling a little bit drained, but completely headache free. The theme of today was once again the weather, because a winter storm was blowing in.

Turns out that my wish came true. Snow!

The bad part is that Justin is trapped at the law school. He has not been released from his practice and I am not a happy camper. The roads are supposed to get bad and I want him to get home safely.

I did some baking to take my mind off of it I experimented with a couple of new recipes and cant wait to share them soon. Right now I am going to watch Mad Men and try to take my mind off of Justin on those treacherous (the weather report’s words, not mine!) roads.

Are you getting snow this week?

Have you seen Silver Lining Playbook?

Exploring Old Salem

A couple of weeks ago, Justin and I attended a charity auction at the law school. One of his friends helped organize it and it sounded like a fun thing to do on what probably would have, otherwise, been an uneventful night. We bought a few raffled tickets and we won a “Bottomless Mug” card to Brugers, a bagel and coffee shop that is located about ten minutes from where we live.

The bottomless mug card give the card holder free coffee, tea, hot chocolate and coke for an entire year. If you live close enough and drink a lot of coffee, it is definitely worth the $150 price tag. Like I mentioned above, we won ours in the raffle, which is pretty cool. We have enjoyed using it and will be sad when the card expires at the end of December!

This morning we had quite a few errands we needed to run, so we decided to begin the morning at Brugers. They have delicious bagel sandwiches and with the egg white and turkey sausage option, its not too too terrible for you (or that’s what I like to tell myself).

After breakfast and a few cups of coffee, we headed to Old Salem. I have been wanting to visit this historical part of our town and the Christmas season was the perfect excuse! First stop was Winkler’s Bakery

My parents have a foreign exchange student this semester from Austria and I wanted to get her something unique from North Carolina to take home. The Moravian Star was perfect! I cant wait to give it to her.

Winklers still has old stoves and ovens and they make a lot of the food in front of you. I forgot to snap a picture but here is one from http://walkingthroughsalem.blogspot.com/

We got to try a sample of the sugar bread; it was delicious!  This adorable woman was also making cookie sandwiches- so we decided to grab one and share.

We have not dug into yet, but will definitely snap a picture of the yuminess tomorrow! There is still so much to see in Old Salem, so I know we will be going back
