Having Thanksgiving so late this year is seriously throwing me off. I cant believe its already December 10th! This holiday season is really flying by.  We do have good news: we can mark 2 items off our 2013 Christmas Bucket List!

Sunday was so very cold. We were expected to get freezing rain, but the temperature hovered right around 33 degrees, preventing anything from freezing. I am not going to complain, because winter weather is not very much fun unless its snow. We spent the afternoon curled up by the fire playing Mastermind and just talking, while drinking Baileys. It was such a nice afternoon! With as busy as Justin gets during school, I especially savor each moment I get with him!

Last night we attended the 49th Annual Wake Forest Lovefeast.

A Lovefeast is a Moravian tradition. Its a service with Christmas songs, a bible reading, a short message and the “feast” (which is often sweet bread and coffee) followed by a candle lighting.  Its a really neat tradition!

I didn’t get too many pictures, because I did not want to disrupt anyone during the celebration, but it was very beautiful.

I will miss the Moravian traditions when we move!

What’s Your Mental Age

And I’ll leave you with this….I saw this quiz yesterday on twitter and had to take it. My parents always said I was born 0 going on 40. This quiz proved it since this 23 year old scored a mental age of 44! This must mean I’m going to love my 40s, right? What age did you get??

Do you have any unique traditions where you live?

What’s your mental age?

St. Nick’s Day

Good Morning! I am genuinely surprised I made it up before 9 this morning, as Justin and I were up until 2am watching Breaking Bad. I know I am little behind on jumping on that bandwagon, but  nonetheless, I am addicted.

I hope everyone is having a great Saturday morning. I am hoping to make it bodyflow this morning, but we’ll see if I make it out of the house. Saturdays are always hard to get motivated!

Last night Justin and I had a nice evening in (watching Breaking Bad obviously), but we did venture out to get ice cream on what was a surprisingly warm evening.  Each month I get a coupon for a buy one get one free ice cream from Baskin Robbins. While we don’t eat ice cream all that often, its nice to have a reason to get out. Plus, its a really cheap “date.” If you like ice cream and a saving money, I highly suggest you sign up!

Last night we redeemed the December coupon.

baskinrobbinsJPGI almost always get chocolate peanut butter. Its delicious!

It was really nice to sit outside and eat our cones. I can’t believe its December, because the weather sure isn’t acting like it is!

Yesterday was also St. Nick’s Day!

I love this holiday because I think the story of St. Nicholas is pretty cool.  Plus, I love all the legends about him and how his image has evolved into the Santa Claus we know and love today.

I know its not really customary to celebrate St. Nick’s day in the U.S., but with my holiday fanatic mother, we always did. My mom mailed us advent gifts and included was a bag to open on December 6 for St. Nick’s day. So, yesterday morning when I woke up I took out the gifts and put them in our shoes, as this is the custom of St. Nick’s day.

This is definitely a tradition I want to continue with our family. Its a great opportunity to give a bit of historical background with kids too!

Questions of the day:

Do you celebrate St. Nicks Day?

Do you have any  other “non traditional” holidays that you celebrate?

Christmas 2013 Bucket List

Happy Cyber Monday! Did you find any really good deals? As a bargain shopper, I love Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but I didn’t find anything I couldn’t live without, so no shopping for me!

I am borrowing an idea from Julie and making a holiday bucket list. Justin and I always talk about the fun things we should do during the Christmas season and then we blink and its over. I want to savor as much time together during this hectic, yet wonderful time of the year (and especially before we go back to Texas for a crazy busy 2 weeks)!

Christmas 2013 Bucket List

Spend an evening looking at lights

Attend a Love Feast in Winston-Salem

Bake holiday treats

Make a batch of homemade hot chocolate

Visit Old Salem to see the Christmas decorations

Decorate our tree

Participate in our church’s Angel Tree Project

Spend an evening curled up by the fire

Watch a new Christmas movie

That’s the preliminary list so far! Of course, my other goal is to document all (or most) of these for the blog.

Thanksgiving 2013

Happy Belated Thanksgiving! Since Justin and I live so far from our families we opted to stay in North Carolina again this year. One of my best friends from college, Hannah moved to Winston Salem for grad school. We had Thanksgiving with Hannah and a good friend Sean, who is in Justin’s class at Wake Law.

We had Thanksgiving with a couple of friends. I made stuffing, spinach salad, chocolate bourbon pecan pie and pumpkin pie. We also brought a smoked turkey and a variety of cheeses.

We enjoyed cheese and crackers as well as a delicious avocado, tomato and bean dip that Hannah made for appetizers.Around 3pm we sat down to eat. Justin had the honors of carving the turkey for the first time! Typical me, I had to capture it in pictures 🙂

He did a great job! After the turkey was carved, we sat down to enjoy our feast of smoked turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, bacon glazed carrots, green bean casserole and spinach salad.

After lunch we played a few rounds of Euchre, a midwestern card game that our friend Sean taught us how to play.  We switched to spades around 7pm and ended up playing until the early hours of Friday morning!     tgiving2 I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving!

Pumpkin Party

Hello! Everytime I say I am going to be better about blogging, you should probably not believe me. I think I have some idea in my head of what my blog needs to be like, but really this is supposed to document our newlywed lives as well as update far away family! So, I will try to be better about it.

A couple of weeks ago we had a few people over for a Pumpkin Party! I made pumpkin muffins, everyone brought their favorite fall beer and we carved pumpkins. Interestingly enough, in the almost 5 years that Justin and I have been together, we have never carved a pumpkin together!

Pumpkin carving has changed a lot from when I was little.  It used to be fairly simple and involved some triangles for eyes and a mouth.

Something along the lines of this:

Compare this to a pumpkin I saw on Facebook that was carved into the shape of a baby in the womb. Everyone is carving super elaborate pumpkins these days. Unfortunately, I lack most artistic skills, so Hannah drew a longhorn on our pumpkin and Justin and I carved it. Super original, I know.

Second Semester of 2L begins

Today is a bittersweet day in the May house. Justin left this morning for the first day of his fourth semester of law school!

I am happy that he is one step closer to his law degree and to a JOB! I am also happy that classes mean he will be back on a schedule. I can’t tell you how hard his break has been on my sleep schedule. Its hard to stay up on student hours and get up on work hours.

But I am sad that classes mean back to the grind and back to Justin being insanely busy. I enjoyed getting to see him and spend a lot of time together over his break.

His break was full of lots of excitement!

We got to celebrate Justin’s 23rd birthday (twice)

On his actual birthday we celebrated with his mom and her family. We had dinner and then went back to his Mom’s house for cake. I made a chocolate chocolate chip cake that my mom always makes for our birthdays. Justin loves it!

While at my parents for Christmas we had a special birthday dinner for Justin. My dad grilled a special birthday steak for him since Justin is not a huge fan of the ham we were having. My sister ordered him a cookie cake, because it is one of his favorites!

We celebrated Christmas three times. Two before with Justin’s Mom and Dad separately and then Christmas Eve and day with my family.

The two weeks we were there were nonstop and when we got home we were exhausted, but we really enjoyed spending time with our families. I think Justin and I have both spent the last two and a half weeks recovering from our trip!

The greatest news about Justin starting his second semester of 2L year?

He is HALFWAY done! My handsome husband is halfway to being a lawyer and I could not be more proud of him!

Christmas Decorations

We had a nice Thanksgiving with family in Raleigh. My family went to Disney World for the holiday, but we decided the trip was a little too far and Justin had school work.

The long weekend was pretty restful. I put away my fall decorations:

Now it was time for Christmas decorations! We don’t have too many Christmas decorations for a few reasons

1. We have very little storage space. Justin and I are constantly having to reorganize to make all of our things to make them fit. I am counting down the days until he is done with law school, because we have already decided the next place we get will be a HOUSE

2. I dont want to spend a lot of money on decorations, especially since I don’t know what kind of house we will have later on.

3. We are leaving for Texas on December 13th! So, we wont even be here for a lot of the Christmas season.

So, this is what we have to work with!

We could not resist this stocking for Lilly. It was $4 at Hobby Lobby and describes her perfectly 🙂

My Nana and I made this wreath last week when I was visiting her!

I was raised by a complete Christmas (and holidays in general) fanatic, so this has been a little difficult for me. My mom has an entire storage unit devoted to her Christmas decorations! She loves Christmas and she successfully instilled it in each of her 4 children, something I will not complain about.

She sent us a little Christmas cheer in the mail- two boxes filled with advent and St. Nick’s Day gifts and assorted Christmas things. I was like a little kid on Christmas morning.

Charlie Brown nativity! My mom said she could not resist

Dachshund card!

Does your family do anything for advent?

When I was really little we just did a chocolate advent calendar and little countdown calendars. My mom started doing little gifts some time when I was in high school. Its kind of fun!
